Why replacing missing teeth is important, and why dental implants could be the perfect answer
As dentists, we know the importance of replacing missing teeth, and we also believe that dental implants is often the perfect way to do it. At Warrendale Dental Care in Ross-on-Wye, our skilled team of clinicians have used implants to restore the smiles of many patients of all ages, and have also improved their quality of life.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants have been hailed as the perfect solution to missing teeth for many patients. They are, in simple terms, artificial replacement tooth roots – small titanium screws that your dentist places in your jaw bone during a minor surgical procedure.
In most cases this is done under local anaesthetic here at our Ross-on-Wye practice. Many patients report it is less traumatic than having a tooth extracted.
Once they have had time to bond with the bone, which takes a few months, permanent replacement teeth can be attached – crowns, bridges or dentures, depending on how many teeth are missing.
Why you should replace missing teeth
If you have lost one or more teeth, you’ll know this can be a traumatic experience. Particularly if the tooth is near the front of your mouth, you may become self-conscious about smiling in public. You may also find that your ability to bite and chew food, and so to enjoy a healthy diet, is affected, while any remaining teeth are likely to move into gaps, becoming crooked and more difficult to clean in the process. This in turn can increase your chances of tooth decay, gum disease and ultimately further tooth loss.
Other problems associated with losing teeth include bone loss and receding gums, which can cause traditional dentures to become loose and uncomfortable. Dental implants help to prevent this because they are osteoconductive – helping to promote bone growth.
